We Got A Mattress Off Of Amazon – Check Out How It Works! Unboxing

I have to say, I was initially skeptical of ordering a mattress from Amazon.

How would it be delivered to the house? How would we get it up the stairs? The low cost – under $200 for a twin mattress – seemed too good to be true.

But it was time for a new mattress. A few months ago, I decided to get my middle son a new mattress. His old one wasn’t comfortable anymore, and he’d been using it for over ten years now. But honestly, I dreaded shopping for the mattress.

Why? Well, honestly, I just hate shopping in general. I don’t like shopping for clothes, shoes, books, or anything else. It takes time out of my day when I could be doing something enjoyable. I’ve been traveling a lot for work lately and my free time has been even more limited than usual.

So I decided to order a mattress from Amazon. We were so happy with the mattress that came for our middle son that we ordered one for the four year olds “big boy bed.” When the little guy was born, we had gotten a convertible crib from BJ’s that transformed into a toddler bed, and a full sized bed.

I tried to find a link to the convertible crib but all I could find were ones that cost $1,600? I know we only paid a fraction of that so I’m not sure if they went up in price the past four years, or if my Google skills are just failing me.

So today I’m going to tell you all about our experience ordering a mattress off Amazon for two of our boys, which one we like the best, talk about how one mattress was lost in New Jersey, and show you the unboxing in case you’re curious how they ship an entire mattress in a small box.

The Arrival Of Amazon Mattress Number One

So when I decided it was time to get a new mattress for our middle son, I decided to give Amazon a try. After reading through the reviews we decided to give this mattress a try, ordering it with free Prime two day shipping.

The Amazon mattress for our older son arrived about a month ago, in a heavy, tall, skinny box. When it was delivered, it was dropped in front of the garage – likely because it was too heavy for the delivery person to bring it to the front door.

The box was surprisingly heavy, and required two people to get it up the stairs. The directions on the box specifically instruct you to not open it until the mattress is where you want it to stay, so we brought it into my middle sons room.

After opening the box, we could see the mattress itself. It was coiled in on itself like a Swiss roll cake, and only about two inches thick. It was wrapped up in many layers of plastic and you could tell it had been vacuum packed.

Honestly, it was hard to believe it was going to expand to a twelve inch thick memory foam twin mattress.

Following the instructions, we put the coiled plastic tube onto the boxspring and started to take the plastic off. Almost immediately, it started to inflate, and you could hear the air rushing in. We worked to take off the plastic quickly before it fully inflated. Once all the plastic was off it was hard to believe this giant mattress had come in that small box.

Per the instructions, it would take a few days to fully inflate. Sure enough, over the next few days the mattress became even more full and firm. Our middle son loved the mattress and we loved the cost. A win/win scenario!

The Next Amazon Mattress Got Lost in New Jersey

So when it was time to convert our four year olds toddler bed into a full-sized bed, we went back to Amazon to pick up another mattress – and a box spring.

The boxspring came in just a few days, right on time. My husband was surprised it was a DIY endeavor to assemble it himself, but found it a pretty easy process. Well, except for the fact that he accidentally assembled it downstairs and then had to squeeze it upstairs. Pro tip – assemble the boxspring in the room the bed is in!

The mattress, on the other hand, was not quite as lucky.

When it didn’t come on time, I went into my Amazon app to view my recent orders. Scrolling down, I noticed that the mattress was marked as having a delay. When I clicked on it to track the shipping, it appeared that the mattress had disappeared somewhere in New Jersey.

Fortunately, there was a note that it should come in a few more days, and if it didn’t to return to the page and I could re-order or request a refund. So a few days ago, that’s exactly what I did. Not only did I get a hassle-free re-order, but they also upgraded me to one day shipping. It arrived the next day, also delivered in front of the garage and requiring a journey in the house and up the stairs. Times like this I’m grateful to have two strong older boys!

Another Amazon Mattress Unfurling

This mattress came similarly packaged to the other one – all coiled up like a vacuum packed snake and inflating as we took off the plastic. This time, though, I managed to take a video of the process and some feedback from the little guy. You can see for yourself what he thought of it in this video. Be sure to stay tuned to the end for the hilarious outtakes that result from filming with a toddler.

Which Amazon Mattress Was Better?

You’ll notice that we ordered two different mattresses, somewhat by accident. I honestly thought we were ordering the same one but apparently not!

The little guys mattress isn’t quite fully inflated yet, because it takes about three days to reach full inflation levels. But both mattresses are crazy comfortable – not just for the kids but also for my husband and I. I prefer my middle sons bed personally, as it’s more of a thick, firm memory foam versus a spring mattress topped with foam. Both are good, though.

Honestly, if purchasing a mattress for a child or a guest room – or even for myself – I wouldn’t hesitate to order one off Amazon again. Yes, I was a bit worried that I couldn’t try it out myself before buying it. But you can’t beat the cost or convenience – and now that I’ve seen for myself how well it works, I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

  1. It’s good to know Amazon sells mattresses that are affordable and comfortable! I’ve been scared to not get a mattress I could see in person, first… the last new one we bought came from IKEA and is super firm and comfy but definitely not as low priced as yours. I’ll check the Amazon ones out next time.

  2. We’ve bought two twin mattresses online as well and then another two for our nieces. I forget which make/model but so far so good!
