Work Optional by Tanja Hester
Tanja, the driving force behind the amazing site Our Next Life, has just come out with a new book called “Work Optional: Retire Early the Non-Penny Pinching Way“.
Tanja and her husband Mark were both high-achievers in demanding careers when they decided to find a way out of the grind and into a life they loved. They recently retired early when she was 38 and he was 41. This book helps outline a plan for you too to achieve your “work optional” life.
The book is divided into three parts:
- Part 1 focuses on defining what kind of work-optional life you want to live
- Part 2 breaks down the financial planning basics, so you can get your financial house in order and move towards financial freedom
- Part 3 talks about thriving in your work optional life – making sure you’re moving towards a life you’ll love, instead of just away from a life or job you hate
You’ll enjoy this book if you’re looking for a different take on the questions of financial freedom and early retirement. Frankly, I believe it would be helpful for traditional retirees as well. We often spend more time thinking about the next car we’re going to buy rather than on how to design a life we love. Tanja can help you change that through this book.
We should all be moving towards a life we love, and a financial plan to make work optional often plays a big part in achieving that. If you’ve been looking for a different kind of take on the financial freedom discussion, you’re going to love this just as much as I did.
P.S. You may have noticed my fifteen year old has his “smile” on of “being patient with his mothers weird hobby of writing about money on the internet”. The Squirrel Manifesto by Ric & Jean Edleman
I’ll be honest, it can be hard to find good money books for younger kids. This book by Ric Edelman helps fill the void by trying to teach younger kids about money using acorns as a stand-in for greenbacks.
In the Squirrel Manifesto, the critters of Woodcutter Wood are taught important lessons about what to do with their acorns – “save a little, spend a little, and always give back!” It’s a cute and fun book you can use as a jumping-off point to have some money conversations with your kids. There’s even a little guide for grown-ups in the back of the book.
This is a fun and quick read, a great addition to a school library or your personal collection. The book was a bit hard for my three year old to grasp, and way too basic for my eleven year old, so I’d suggest an ideal reader would be in the four to seven year old age range.
Ric Edelman is a bestselling personal finance author and a top financial advisor, while his wife Jean writes about the softer side of money. The illustrator, Dave Saboski, has worked on multiple Disney films and it shows in the beautiful illustrations throughout the book. I have to say, the illustrations are my favorite part.
Financial Freedom by Grant Sabatier
If I were back in my early 20’s looking to dip my toes into the personal finance world. I think my go-to would probably be Grant’s new book Financial Freedom.
This book has it all, from a personal finance nerd perspective. Specific, actionable tips on earning more. Details on how to save and invest. Inspiring stories, and stories of people who don’t have their financial acts together, mixed in to help keep the book engaging rather than dry.

My one difference of opinion is with his real estate advice. As someone who lived through the Great Recession and bought her current home in 2006, I’ve seen leverage go both ways. It magnifies your wins, but also your losses. My personal experiences have made me more conservative here. But it doesn’t detract from the overall awesomeness of the book.

I already ordered Tanja’s book, but have heard a few of Grant’s interviews and think his Financial Freedom book sounds pretty good too. Though with a 2-year-old I’m already starting to think about how to teach her about money, so the Squirrel Manifesto would be of interest as well.

Hi, I’d be interested in the Work Optional book. It sounds like it would be the most relevant to where I am in my financial journey. My husband is not much of a saver, more of a YOLO kind of guy, so it’s hard to really figure out where we stand because his income and spending fluctuates wildly. The book looks like it would have some good info to share with him, although he’d probably prefer the squirrel book LOL.
